In wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen dieser beiden Aspekte wurde dem abweichenden Verhalten immer mehr Interesse entgegengebracht als dem konformen Verhalten. Letztendlich steht an erster Stelle der Untersuchungen nicht die Frage, wie konformes Verhalten entsteht, sondern welche Ursache abweichendes Verhalten hat und wie diesem entgegenzuwirken ist.

Entgegen dieser ursächlich orientierten soziologischen Theorien richtet der Labeling process seine Aufmerksamkeit auf die Instanzen sozialer Kontrolle, welche erst deviantes Verhalten zur Kriminalität durch Kriminalisierung erschafft. Da ein grundlegender Auftrag der Sozialen Arbeit darin besteht, sich der Differenzminimierung abweichenden Verhaltens der Klientel anzunehmen und sie durch sozialarbeiterische Interventionen zur gesellschaftlichen Teilhabe zu befähigen, besteht die Möglichkeit, mit Fragen des Strafrechts in Berührung zu geraten. Sollte an dieser Stelle Soziale Arbeit intervenieren, setzt das fundiertes Gundlagenwissen voraus.

Diesbezüglich möchte ich der Relevanz des Labeling technique für das deutsche Strafrecht, speziell im Kontext von Intensivtätern, nachgehen. Zum Verständnis des Aspektes des Labeling method wird sich die vorliegende Arbeit anfänglich mit der Entwicklungsgeschichte des Etikettierungsansatzes auseinandersetzen. Inwieweit der Labeling strategy proper ist für das Jugendstrafrecht und welchem wissenschaftlichen Anspruch sich die Soziale Arbeit stellen muss, soll in einem kurzen Ausblick resümiert werden.
